Parnassian Publishing, Logo Design

Parnassian Publishing was an imprint created under Invisible Publishing during my time in the Book Publishing practicum at York University. It's sole publication, Little Bird Stories, Vol. 7, was published in April 2022.

The name was chosen for it's relevance as a literary term, and for it's strong imagery evoking Mount Parnassus in Greece.

Because of this, throughout the design process for the logo, it was important to include mountains in every draft.

First hand-drawn drafts, with mountain range and Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia.

The first versions of the logo had hand drawn mountains that were re-drawn with a graphic tablet in Illustrator, allowing me to manipulate the lines of the mountains more closely.

In each version I also added elements like shadows, clouds and sun, different text placements, and varying font choices. One of the versions was rendered with a dark-blue background, which was an edited version of a picture of mountains I took in Newfoundland.

Earliest drafts.
Mountains in Newfoundland that served as a backdrop to the blue version.

I felt that these earlier drafts were too reminiscent of other well-known logos, so I went back to drafting new ideas. Looking at the logos of other publishing houses, I realized I needed to show that this was a logo for a publishing house. This involved incorporating books in some way, tying together the Parnassus mountains and the world of publishing.

Second round of hand-drawn sketches, and different font variations.

From these new drafts, I made three new designs. Again, these were retraced in Illustrator using a graphic tablet. At this stage it's becoming clearer the final direction the logo will take.

The first design on the left didn't look right. The other two are more in line with the look I was going for

The final version of the logo,  which appears in Little Bird Stories, Vol. 7, takes elements from each stage of drafting. There are shadow elements on the mountains from the first circular version of the logo. The font, Comfortaa Bold, is rendered all in lower-case, which gives a more modern clean feel. Underneath the text is a book rendered in a minimalistic design.
